Right now, the New York State government is considering a few bills that could lower New Yorkers’ electricity bills by $1 billion a year by boosting solar deployment in the state. But we need your help to get them over the finish line! Here’s what’s on the table:

• The ASAP Act would expand the state’s target for distributed solar (in other words, rooftop solar on people’s homes and businesses, and community solar) to 20 gigawatts by 2030, or enough energy to power 3.5 million homes. It would also improve the grid interconnection processes – aka the process new projects go through to get plugged into the grid and start producing energy – to make it faster, easier, and cheaper for consumers.

• The Automated Solar Permitting Act would streamline an outdated process so rooftop solar projects can be completed faster and more affordably for all New York residents.

Why it’s important

Solar is the fastest growing and most affordable energy source in the world. As the price of gas rises and global markets continue to face uncertainty, solar energy, paired with battery storage, is the best way to guarantee reliable and affordable power for families and businesses.

What this means for your community

Not only will this legislation help New Yorkers save on their energy bills in the short term, but a recent analysis also found that the ASAP Act will save residents $1 billion in wholesale electricity costs every year!

Our goal

By contacting your legislators, you can add your voice to ensure that New York supports energy policies that include growing solar power and battery storage to strengthen America’s energy independence and security.
